So much stuff

My years of accumulating junk are catching up with me. Since I’m going to be moving at the end of the year, I need to start decreasing the amount of stuff I’ve got so there’s less to carry around. It’s times like this where I realize that I have a lot more junk than I need, especially considering how often some of it gets used. Over the past couple days, I have been working on a list of things to get rid of either by trashing, giving away, or selling. So far, trashing is winning.

Tonight’s project was replacing the old crap Pentium 90 router I’ve been using for the past four years. The old machine was loud, had whiny hard drives for no good reason, and cranked out the heat. The replacement machine is the old ziggy, with all the loud parts removed and running only a Fedora live CD. It took a little bit of work to get exactly what I wanted because of the pain of working on write-once media, but I got it figured out. The result is a much quieter living room, an old piece of junk in the trash room downstairs, and useful hardware that was just sitting around being pressed into use.

But that’s really only the tip of a great big ball of garbage. Looking around, I found a giant plastic table that I don’t have any use for. Its current role is sitting above some boxes stacked up on the floor so they don’t look so in the way. I have eleven one-quart mason jars in the kitchen cabinets from when I needed to buy one. What am I going to do with all those things? I don’t can. I have a blender I’ve never used, an expensive bike trainer I’ve only used twice, and yet another ATX computer case. Somehow, all this stuff needs to get out of here in the next two months. If I know you and you live nearby, chances are I am going to try to pawn some of this stuff off on you.

Oh, I almost forgot. The reason I didn’t post for the past several days is because of a trip to Charlottesville, VA. I didn’t feel like writing something so long tonight, so that post will have to wait another couple days.
