July Fourth in Columbus - July 7, 2005
It’s taken me several days to decide exactly what I should write about regarding last weekend. I think I finally have it figured out. I spent last weekend (Friday night through Monday morning) camping in the backyard of some friends in Columbus, OH and generally partying. Those of you who are familiar with me may recall that I used to be very active on the everything2 website, a sort of communal group of writers. As time has gone on, the site has moved more and more towards quality of writing rather than the community aspects and most of my friends from the site have left. Therefore, so have I. Incidentally, it is through this site that I know most of the people I am always travelling around to hang out with.

Finally making some AST progress - June 30, 2005
I’ve been stuck on mitchell (my compiler project) for several months now. In particular, I’ve been working on abstract syntax tree simplification in preparation for translation to IR but it’s been really hard and not interesting enough to get motivated to work on. But it looks like the several hours I put into it tonight might actually get me moving again.

I have entirely too much beer in my closet - June 29, 2005
I just took a quick survey of the closet and as it turns out, I have a whole lot of homebrew. It appears I brew way faster than I can drink.

Hiking Mt. Flume and Mt. Liberty - June 27, 2005
Since it was over 90 degrees and really humid yesterday, we decided it would be the perfect day to hike up two more 4000’ peaks - Mts. Flume and Liberty. I went with a couple guys from work (Lon and Jeff) and some friends of theirs (Steve, Ruth, Christina). The route we chose started out at a visitors’ center, followed a bike path for a while, broke off that on the Liberty Springs trail, then headed up the Flume Slide trail to the top of Mt. Flume. Then we walked up the Franconia Ridge trail over to Mt. Liberty where we picked up the Liberty Springs trail again and walked back to the car. Overall, a 10 mile hike with over 3000’ of total elevation gain. We reached the visitors center just after 9:30 and were on the trail before 10.

Testing out this journal thing - June 23, 2005
I think I’m probaly the last person on Earth who doesn’t have some sort of web journal deal, so I’m going to try fixing that. In the past, all my efforts to maintain a dynamic website have failed because I get bored with it and just stop making updates. Hopefully this one will be different. My current plan is to keep my main web page as it is - a place for me to announce releases of my software and big giant events. This journal is going to be just for boring everyday things that for some reason, I think everyone should know about.

skf test 1 released - June 21, 2005
Yes, it has been a very long time since I’ve made any updates to this page. I’ve been busy with work and non-programming hobbies. I have also been working on this little game from time to time and now it’s ready for a test release. skf is the basic falling block game with a couple twists along the way to make it more interesting. This test release is almost completely finished, except for a couple miscellaneous graphics and sounds.

Mitchell Preview 4 released - January 21, 2005
Hot on the heels of preview 3 is the second release this month - preview 4. This release of the mitchell compiler and programming language adds no significant new functionality. It is merely a bug fix and minor feature release. Some of the new features include improved error reporting, new command line options, escape sequences in strings, and detecting infinite loops of type declarations. Unfortunately, the next release will probably be a long time in coming as it will involve a major new phase.

Mitchell Preview 3 released - January 7, 2005
This is the first preview release of the mitchell compiler and programming language for several months. It looks like I haven’t been busy from the lack of updates, but I have been putting in a lot of work adding a type checker and semantic analysis phase to the compiler. This is one of my least favorite parts of compilation so it took a bit longer, but it’s mostly done. There was a preview 2 tarball but for some reason, I never announced it. At last, the long drought is over. Expect a preview 4 with bug fixes and minor improvements fairly quickly.
The Mitchell language and compiler home page has more information and documentation.

Back from the dead - November 21, 2004
The move went pretty well - I’m now settled into my apartment in Nashua and have even started that new job thing (Red Hat for anyone who didn’t already know). On the bangmoney.org front, Speakeasy got DSL installed pretty quickly. There are still some name service problems floating around but I’m hoping those get ironed out within another day or two. Until then, access will be limited to people using nameservers with the right information.

On the move - November 1, 2004
It’s been just about a year now, so it’s time for me to move again. I’m off to Nashua, NH this time. As such, bangmoney.org is going to be down for a couple weeks while I move and DSL gets hooked up. It should be going down around 11/4 and I estimate at most three weeks of downtime. Speakeasy has been contacted and is working on setting up DSL for me at the new place, so it’s just a matter of time. Of course, this means all projects, mail, etc. will be unavailable for a little while. Here’s hoping it goes smoothly.
