New England Hundred Highest

This page tracks progress across three lists of peaks, including the winter versions of each:

• The NH 4000’ers
• The New England 4000’ers
• The New England Hundred Highest

For the first two, the rules are that the peak must be at least 4000’ in elevation and must rise at least 200’ above the col with the next mountain. The third list has no rule. It’s simply the hundred highest that meet the col requirement. It works out to 48 peaks in NH and 67 in New England. The NH list is by far the most popular, though the others have been gaining in popularity over the years as the number of completers of the NH list grows. The winter versions of each are much less popular overall, with the basic NH list being the one that sees the most completers.

I completed my NH summer NH 4000’ers on September 7, 2009 on the summit of Waumbeck. I do not recommend saving this one for last as it’s pretty dull. I completed my winter NH 4000’ers on March 18, 2013 on the summit of Carrigain following a very busy winter season. This is a fine peak to end on, though it requires a lot of walking due to the closed road. I completed my New England 4000’ers on October 17, 2016 with a hike of Abraham, Spaulding, and Sugarloaf in Maine. This was a great way to finish this list though it does require a car spot.

For peaks that are more obscure (most of the ones below the 4000’ers), I’ve provided brief notes on where the peak is and how to get to it. I don’t want to give complete routes, as some of these are bushwhacks and part of the point is finding your own way. Coordinates are given by clicking on each summit’s name.

Please don’t trust the map links too much, though. I know for a fact that many of the trails on these online topo maps either do not exist or have been moved, and there are other trails that do exist but are not shown. Get your own updated map to the region before going out there.

I am only keeping track of my first ascent of each here. I keep more detailed records of every hike including who came along, what trails we took, and so on.
