We wanted to through hike the entire trail in five days, but cold rain forecast on Tuesday made us decide to scale back to four days. Then, more cold rain in the forecast for Sunday night and all Monday made us decide to just stop in Washington after three days. It was below freezing both nights, one night in a shelter and one at a tent platform.

Major peaks:Little Haystack, Lincoln, Lafayette
Trails:Falling Waters, Franconia Ridge, Old Bridle Path
Distance:8.6 miles
Elevation gain:3751 feet

I’ve wanted to do this hike without all the people for a long time, so I started at 7pm and finished up just after midnight. I needed a headlamp starting just below the summit of Little Haystack. I hoped to hike with the mostly full moon, but it didn’t come up until I was well down off the ridge. I didn’t see any people after the waterfalls.

Jul 13 : Mount Peale

Major peaks:Mount Peale
Trails:Burlfriends, FS road, herd paths
Distance:6.3 miles
Elevation gain:2744 feet

This was a short hike up a very tall mountain. We camped at La Sal Pass the night before which meant I could hike right from the campsite. I got off route on the way up and had to slab over to the right chute, which was difficult and dangerous. After that I had no problems following herd paths and goat paths all the way to the summit and back down. The scree chute everyone takes is very steep and would be dangerous with more people. This was the first ultra-prominent mountain I went out of my way to get.

Jul 8 : Elbert

Major peaks:Mount Elbert
Trails:Continental Divide, South Mount Elbert
Distance:11.2 miles
Elevation gain:4108 feet

I was able to drive the truck all the way to the higher 4WD parking lot which made for a much shorter hike. The trail was very easy and I got an early start which meant no weather problems. Despite all the acclimatization, I still struggled with the elevation above about 13600’. This was my first really serious state high point.

Jul 3 : Lost Lake

Trails:Lost Lake
Distance:2.6 miles
Elevation gain:395 feet

The lake was scenic, but the trail was crummier than expected. There was a very muddy and boggy section we had to walk through, and then there were a couple significant ups and downs in both directions.

Major peaks:Peak 12560, Peak 12792
Trails:Continental Divide
Distance:4.8 miles
Elevation gain:1227 feet
People:Sarah

Hike from Cottonwood Pass to the closest nearby activatable peak, passing over another peak on the way. Sarah went to the first peak before turning around and I went out to the farther one.

Another long hike on the M-M trail starting at Widow Gage Town Forest and going to the southern access trail for Gap Mountain. The part up until hitting the 4WD road north of Little Monadnock is fun, but the rest is just a ton more road walking.

Mar 27 : Metacomet-Monadnock

Trails:Metacomet-Monadnock
Distance:14.1 miles
Elevation gain:1374 feet

Long hike on the southernmost piece of the M-M Trail in NH. Lots of road walking, no summits, no snow, no people. Some parts were very muddy. I stopped at a trail junction in the Widow Gage Town Forest. The part from the parking lot south to the state line was nice, but the rest wasn’t great. I wouldn’t do this hike again.

Long, snow-free loop over lots of trails in Amherst. This didn’t go anywhere especially interesting, but it was nice to do such a long hike so close to my house.

Ski trip of Livermore Road from the Kanc to Waterville Valley. We had to walk about a mile just north of Livermore Pass because it was way too steep and sidehilled, but the rest was skiable. The descent was easier than I expected and tons of fun.
